BFI UK Global Screen Fund makes 10 awards in TELEVISUAL

The BFI has made ten new awards through its UK Global Screen Fund, supporting international opportunities for the UK’s independent screen sector. The productions include feature documentaries The Contestant, written and directed by Clair Titley; 1001 Days, directed by Chloe White and Kethiwe Ncgobo; and Copa ’71, directed by Rachel Ramsay and James Erskine. Sheffield DocFest 2023: And the winners are… in BUSINESS DOC EUROPE

The winners of the 30th Sheffield DocFest 2023 were announced June 18 during the award ceremony at Sheffield’s Crucible Playhouse. The festival saw international and UK delegate attendance rise by 17% compared to 2022, organisers underline. More than 2550 delegates from more than 60 countries attended the five-day festival – up from 2188 delegates attending in 2022. This year the festival presented 37 world, 20 international, 10 European and 47 UK premieres, as well as 8 retrospective films. from 52 countries of production. Read more.

10 African films to watch at the Encounters International Documentary Festival in THE AFRICA REPORT

SHEFFIELD DOC FEST 2023 in CINEUROPA

That’s a wrap for the 2023 edition of Sheffield DocFest (14-19 June). The closing ceremony of the event was held at Sheffield’s Crucible Playhouse on 18 June. This year’s programme included 37 world, 20 international, ten European and 47 UK premieres, as well as eight retrospective films, hailing from 52 countries of production. More than 2,550 delegates, including 190 industry representatives, attended the gathering, marking a 17% increase on 2022’s figures. Read more.

Taskovski Picks Up Documentary ‘1001 Days,’ a Portrait of Motherhood in South Africa, Ahead of International Premiere at IDFA in VARIETY

Taskovski Films Sales has picked up documentary “1001 Days,” directed by Chloe White and Kethiwe Ngcobo, which will have its international premiere at IDFA in the Luminous selection.

The film follows three fearless, charismatic women, who take on the role of home visitors in Alexandra, a township in Johannesburg. Thandiwe, Khosi and Zanele help pregnant women and women who have recently given birth, all too aware that the first 1001 days, from conception to two years, are critical. Read more.

Storytelling and Debate at the 2023 Global Health Film Festival in THE LANCET

The storytelling at this year’s GHFF takes viewers on a journey—sometimes tragic, at other times uplifting. Hope and the power of community feature in Chloe White and Kethiwe Ngcobo’s intimate 1001 Days. The film follows newborn home visits by the Ububele programme and its dedicated local women who support mothers and babies in Alexandra, South Africa, a community affected by unemployment, poverty, and a high burden of HIV. What all of the films certainly do, as McHugh notes, is present a truly global “springboard for really rich and profound discussion and exploration.” Read more here.

“Avoiding being just another documentary about the work of an NGO, the approach becomes more intimate to focus on young mothers from a suburb outside Johannesburg, who face the period of 1001 days in which the main affective bond is established with their babies, but in an environment of abuse, mistreatment and poverty. In such a way that the film reflects with moving moments, but perhaps too much constant dialogue, on motherhood in an intimate look that turns children into the axis on which their mothers' survival is sustained.” Read more

Special mention was given to 1001 Days directed by Kethiwe Ngcobo & Chloe White (UK, South Africa, 2023). 

The Jury, Alexandra Judkins, Amanda Daud, Annabel Bai Jackson, Jenny Luisa Barruol and Tymofii Donets added: “We would love to give a special mention to 1001 Days by Kethiwe Ngcobo and Chloe White. This film prioritized collaboration and intimacy and told the stories of these young women in a way that was non-exploitative and honest.” Read more
